It is some 14,000 years ago since a glacier slowly worked its way through the calcareous schist rocks of the Maiskogel and Bürgkogel mountains. A valley cut was left behind through which Kaprun's River Ache flows to this day.
The river dug itself 30 metres deep into the ground and left behind strikingly smooth surfaces and natural whirlpools. Via wooden jetties and numerous bridges visitors can walk along the narrow rock faces, amidst the 3000 metre summits in the Hohe Tauern National Park.
The footbridge through Sigmund-Thun Gorge, along with the educational nature trail around and the exhibition are in the Krafthaus Kaprun-Hauptstufe provide a core element of the "Erlebnis- & Erholungsraumes Bürgkogel Klammsee".
This wonderful area in Kaprun valley, in the foothills of the Hohe Tauern National Park serves as inspiration to all hikers and anyone looking for a place to regenerate, while enjoying nature and history in Kaprunertal.
