Winding initially at a leisurely pace up to the top, then following the course of the natural subsurface, between lush mountain meadows, vibrant flower-filled pastures, rocky scree, ice and snow. The mountain pass, spans 48 km in total and proceeds in 36 switchbacks deep into the core of the biggest National Park in Austria, whose 1800 km² area spans the states of Salzburg, Tyrol and Carinthia. The highest point of this mountain road is the Edelweißspitze, at just over 2500m. Numerous three-thousand metre mountains provide an astonishing view, but the biggest of them all is the Großglockner. At 3798m this impressive mountain towers over the entire region and at the same time is the highest summit in Austria. Every year the Großglockner High Alpine Road brings visitors from across the globe to the centre of the National Park.
