Kaprun - Holidays under mighty Alpina summits

Situated at the foot of Kitzsteinhorn, Kaprun is a prime tourism destination in Europe, featuring 5,000 guest beds and approximately 650,000 overnight stays per year, which makes it one of the economic flagship of the Alpine republic. A special attraction for holidaymakers from all over the world is the glacier skiing area at a height of 2,900 metres above sea level. This is where winter sports enthusiasts meet the best of conditions for unalloyed fun in the snow.

Even in the summertime, it is perfectly possible to use all the pistes which cover a distance of 40 kilometres. About 15 km of the fluffy snow are to be found on Maiskogel, the little brother of mighty Kitzsteinhorn. This family mountain with its gently ascending slopes constitutes ideal grounds for those who are taking their first 'steps' on the boards. Getting up to the peak is a piece of cake: the ski bus takes the guests directly to the lifts and cable cars.

The village can look back on an eventful history covering many centuries. Its figurehead is its castle, 'Burg Kaprun'. The building, which underwent complete restoration in 1975, was erected on a prominent piece of rock in the 12th century. Even up until today, it has been serving as a venue for many cultural events. Its eastern tower, which is called 'Turn ze Chaprunne', is a real eye-catcher and was built in the Romanic style. It is said to have been erected as a compensation for attacks by the Velber Family.

Where tourism was only a secondary phenomenon about one hundred years ago, you will now find more than 5,000 guest beds. In 931 AD, Kaprun, called 'Chataprunnin in Pisconcia' back then, was mentioned for the very first time. Yet, even a good number of years later, there was hardly more than a small mountain farm in that place. It was only in 1280 AD that it grew, when they started building a castle, Burg Kaprun, which now serves as the town's landmark.

Tourism really only started at the beginning of the 20th century when the contemplative community began to make itself a name as a mountain guide village. In 1955, the launching of the Tauernkraftwerke power stations paved the way for a continual upward development. The hydroelectric power stations grew to be amongst Austria's largest and most significant sources of energy. In fact, it was then that people from all over the world also started to focus on this community situated in Pinzgau.

The sensational development of Austria's first skiing region on a glacier marked another piece of impressive pioneer work following the construction of the power plants. Even today, the world's highest cable car supporting stand measuring 113.6 metres is located on Kitzsteinhorn. But the people of Kaprun have been brave trailblazers since 1893: back then, Nikolaus Gassner made a gorge, the so-called Sigmund Thun Klamm, accessible. It is a natural spectacle which still amazes its visitors today.
